Three brilliant planets and the nearly Full Moon will
make for a terrific show as winter nears an end.  We
will start with a slide show on those three planets and
then go outside, weather- permitting, for telescopic
views of Jupiter, Venus and Mars!   Then, just after 8:30
pm, the nearly Full Moon will rise over the trees in the
east, capping off what should be a great evening of
astronomy.

Mars is the star tonight, at its best high in the south as
it gets dark.  We will start our evening with a slide
show on The Red Planet and its notorious reputation as
the god of war.  Does Mars indicate that the Mayan
“End of the World” really will come in December?  We’ll
discuss that!  Then, weather- permitting, we will go
outside and take a close look through the telescope at
the most famous of all the planets, its polar ice caps
and mysterious “continents” on display.

Tonight we say goodbye to Venus, the Queen of
Planets, which is racing toward a rendezvous with the
sun in just a few days.  We will start with a slide show
on Venus, Earth’s “sister planet,” and what we have
recently learned about its super-hot surface and ultra-
dense atmosphere.  Then we will go outside, weather-
permitting, to get a telescopic view of Venus’ beautiful
white crescent, like a miniature moon.  Finally, we’ll
get one last look at Mars for 2012.  Don’t miss this
great spring planet show!
